The mission of the Research Program on Biodiversity and Marine Ecosystems (BEM) is to promote and conduct research that contributes to improve knowledge of marine and coastal biodiversity, and the biological and environmental processes that rule their existence, intended to their conservation and sustainable use.
Its vision is to achieve national and international recognition for providing the information required for the knowledge, management and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity, done by a scientific, adequate and committed team.
It is aimed to the generating of information and knowledge on marine and coastal biological diversity in its broadest sense, as well as the phenomena and processes that rule their existence. The activities, carried out in the context of this program, which transcend national by its nature and scientific importance, contribute significantly to provide knowledge required by the USIS to decision making for the conservation of biodiversity and ordering costal policies.
Objectives
- Conduct a national inventory of marine biodiversity
- Contribute to the conservation of marine and coastal biodiversity
- Determine the functional relationships between marine and coastal ecosystems.
